چکیده

Aim: The present study was conducted to investigate the fishery, diet composition and reproductive aspects of obtuse barracuda landed in Karnataka, south-west coast India. Methodology: Feeding traits 1229 samples (638 males 591 females) S. obtusata studied for a period five years. index relative importance (IRI) determined each component stomach. Reproductive such as maturity stages, gonadosomatic fecundity were investigated. Results: most predominant prey item terms frequency occurrence (93.1%), number (91.4%), weight (93.2%), IRI (3615.5) also % (98.5%) fishes. Crustaceans cephalopods noticed less frequently represented by shrimps Loligo sp. estimated length at first male female fishes 20.5 21.3 cm, respectively. Higher GSI values observed during post monsoon (October-November) followed summer pre (April-May) season both females, indicating two peak spawning periods. Interpretation: comprehensive on major biological characteristics Sphyraena could be useful developing appropriate management strategies conservation judicious exploitation this commercially important resource. Key words: Barracuda, Fecundity, Gonadosomatic index,

(1) The characteristics of the lipids (acetone-soluble lipid, lecithin, cephalin and sphingolipid) obtained from barracuda, Sphyraena pinguis GUNTHER, were studied from the view point of fat metabolism of fish. (2) Forty-one fresh sample fish caught in the Komekami fishing ground near Odawara City (west part of Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan) on the 4th of October, 1959, were extracted with acetone...

Larval ecology of the great barracuda, Sphyraena barracuda, and other sphyraenids in the Straits of Florida

The great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) is a widespread, ecologically and socioeconomically important coastal fish, yet very little is known about its larvae. We examined spawning and larval ecology of Western Atlantic sphyraenids using monthly ichthyoplankton samples collected over 2 years along a transect spanning the east–west axis of the Straits of Florida (SOF). Samples were dominated by...

Selective mortality during the larval and juvenile stages of snappers (Lutjanidae) and great barracuda Sphyraena barracuda

Selective mortality during the early life stages in marine organisms can affect the magnitude and composition of recruitment, yet these processes have not been examined in economically important predatory coral reef fishes. Utilizing 3 different stage-specific sampling techniques (shipboard plankton tows, larval light traps, juvenile surveys/seines), we repeatedly sampled multiple cohorts of 3 ...
